You will need:

  • drawing paper or sketch pad
  • Sanford Mirado® pencil or Sharpie® marker
  • interesting objects to draw

Contour drawings are made up entirely of lines. Drawing contour lines are a great way to start many works of art. Here's how!

1. To make a contour drawing you draw only the edges or outlines of the shapes you see. There is no shading. You may want to to warm up with some blind contour drawings!

2. Start with a simple object (a pen, stapler, fruit, jar...). Study the shapes you see. Look at the edges. Begin drawing slowly and carefully

Draw the big shapes first. Then add the details. Remember! Draw only lines!

3. Now choose something harder to draw. Shoes make great contour drawings!

Outline the shape of the shoe. Add all the edges, seams, and designs that you see

4. Now you are ready to try a still life. Arrange a bunch of interesting objects together and draw them. Remember, start with the basic shapes and then add details.

Don't worry about making things 3D. Try to flatten the objects with your eyes and draw the shapes you see.

5. Give your artwork a title, tell us about it and send it to us!
