You will need:
- drawing paper
- simple forms to look at (orange, ball, bottle, box...)
1. You can learn to shade shapes so they look like 3-D forms. Practice drawing the outlines of some basic forms. Need help? Watch an animation showing some basic ways to draw a

2. First, choose a round object (a sphere) and place it on your desk or table. Look carefully at the color. Where is it darkest? Where is it lightest? If it is shiny, are there patches of reflected light—highlights?

3. Before you start coloring and shading, you may want to practice your color pencil technique by looking at The Values of Color: Drawing Shades and Tints.

4. Select your color. Start where the object is darkest and lightly color the form. You can always make it darker! Press less and less as you get to the lightest spot. You may want to leave some white to show a highlight.
5. Keep coloring until you have a smooth tone from light to dark.
6. You may want to go back with black or a darker value of your color to deepen the shadowed areas. 7. Now add a shadow on the ground to make your sphere look really 3-D.

8. Now find other forms and try them too! Try changing your light source and see how that changes the way the forms look. Try another media-- Watercolor pencils, watercolor paints, or oil pastels.
