You will need:

  • Prismacolor® ArtStix®, Nupastel® or Foohy® Metallic colored pencils or colored pencils (optional)
  • drawing paper
  • permission from your folks to make "rubbings"

Make a landscape from cool textures around your house! Artists create textures with paints, pencils, clay, or anything else they can get their hands onto. Textures can be things you touch or just look at. You can use many different coloring media to make "rubbings" of textures all over your house! Here’s how:

Here's what you do:

1. Find interesting surfaces around the house or outside to make rubbings. Try your floors, grates, tree bark, the bottom of your shoe, sidewalks, carpet, or anything that might look neat when you rub a pencil over it.

2. Lay a piece of paper over surface and rub it with a pencil. Use firm, even strokes until the pattern or texture shows through.

3. Label each rubbing so you know where you made it!

4. Now make a landscape using the rubbing textures you discovered. What would make a good sky? Which texture looks like water? Mountains? Make trees or a building from another rubbing. Use your imagination!!

5. Try another one! See if your friends can guess where you made your rubbings!
