Go West, Young Artist

Nature is dangerous and evil lurks in the wilderness.

"Aye, I heartily disagree with Mr. Innes’ view of man’s relationship with Nature!

"I see how technology and progress are ravaging those bonnie landscapes which so inspire us. Aye, it is in Nature that Mankind can find beauty and truth. But the frontier, I fear, will soon be wiped out by these noisy, belching steam engines. A muckle nuisance they are!

"The strong fiber of the American character has been forged in the vast wilderness—but I fear that soon you’ll see that wilderness only in our landscape paintings! That is the story I want to tell with my artwork.

Andrew Melrose, Westward the Star of Empire Makes its Way, 1867
