"Thousands of years ago, artists realized how pleasing "thirds" are to the eye. Eventually a mathematical formula was developed called the Golden Section. No need to go into the details now—you've got plenty of time to study this in art school—but the basic rule is to divide things into thirds in order to make them look pleasing.
