Why are you here?
"Ever
since I heard about the wonders of the Yellowstone, I had to
see it with my own eyes! So I joined the U.S. Geological Survey
expedition led by Ferdinand
V. Hayden. The Survey is mapping and measuring the
region. My job is to capture this place on canvas and convince the public
that these natural wonders really do exist.
"And believe me, many Americans believe that spouting geysers
and stinking mudpots are but fantasies of explorers imaginations.
"Nowadays, geological surveys usually bring both photographers
and artists to create visual images of the landscape. My
friend William Henry Jackson and I work together to document what we
see.

"My drawings and paintings show my impressions of
Yellowstone. I believe my paintings will be the first views of
Yellowstone that the people of the East Coast will see in color!"

"Our expedition leader Ferdinand Hayden has been talking about
how we should protect
and preserve Yellowstone as some sort of a public recreation area.
Maybe Mr. Jackson and my pictures will help show people what a national
treasure this place is!"
Tell
me more about geysers and mud pots!
Tell
me about your paintings.
