How do you capture dramatic lighting?

"Interesting choice... Most people find that sky to look flat, not deep and dramatic. But look at Mr. Heade’s sky. His sky is not a solid block of color. He demonstrates a very important observation—the sky is lighter closer to the horizon line.

"The reason is simple. When you look straight up into the sky, you are looking through dozens of miles of air. But when you look toward the horizon, you are looking through hundreds of miles of air.

"There is much dust in the air, which absorbs light. Thus you see more of that dust toward the horizon than high above.

"Now how can lighting create mood? Let's examine a few examples:

	"Mr. Constable creates a soft and gentle mood with the light of early morning.
	"Mr. Church lit the clouds from below as the sun sets. Such intense colors accurately reflect the way that our atmosphere absorbs and scatters light—but it also creates a very dramatic mood, wouldn't you say?

"Well, I must return to my work...and you, my son, have much practicing to do!"
