Leonardo's Workshop: An ArtEdventure with Carmine Chameleon

"You've got sharp eyes!" says Carmine. "I see two things wrong here:

"Paint tubes weren't invented until the 19th century—four hundred years after Leonardo picked up a paint brush.

"And I think that these paints are acrylic. Acrylic paint wasn't invented until the 1930s. It uses human-made chemicals to bind the pigment to the wall or canvas. They are tough, bright and clean-up with water. Leonardo would have been amazed!

Pigments with mortar & pestle"Back in the Renaissance," says Carmine, "Leonardo or his assistants had to grind and mix paints by hand. They ground up minerals, plants and animal parts to make these pigments. Renaissance artists had just a few ways to bind the pigment to the wall or canvas.

"Can you match the binding agent with the paint?"
