Assistants. During the Renaissance, important artists such as Leonardo da Vinci did not work alone. They usually had apprentices and assistants, who did much of the manual labor involved in art. As a teenager, Leonardo himself apprenticed in the workshop of renowned artist Andrea del Verrochio.
